The Mail Buoy Episode 194

So you know those times when you have these great plans ready to put right into action – only nothing goes like you expected and instead your plans completely fall apart?

Well, that was what happened with the last few weeks…  We had a grand plan to record shows and check out some new ships – and everything fell apart.  But we’re back with a new show now and aren’t expecting any interruptions for a while…  So there’s that…

What we talked about this week:

Cruise West introduced a “free-flowing” itinerary, while Celebrity continues embracing technology.  Crystal is revising it’s 2011 West Coast plans.  Royal Caribbean is testing a “new” extended stay program in Fort Lauderdale – but is it really all that new?

Shopping on Queen Elizabeth will be decidedly British, and work continues on Seabourn Quest.  Princess looks after their Australian passengers on Dawn Princess, and once again we bring you a story of passengers behaving badly…

Some times we have an episode that just names itself – and this was one of them…

It was a busy week Celebrity moves some ships around and trades Baltimore sailings for South Pacific Sailings.

Carnival is adding comedy clubs and testing out a new smoking policy.

HAL will sail to Bermuda from NY for another year, and MSC firms up the order for their latest newbuild (and renames the ship too!).

Emerald Princess has some trouble off Ft Lauderdale, and Cunard commemorates their 170th anniversary.

1 is dead and another injured after a bizarre incident in Genoa, and the Cruise Vessel Safety and Security Act has been signed into law.

It was a pretty quiet week this week – so we took the opportunity to make a minor change to the website – and add some pretty big functionality.  By clicking on the “Other Travel” link at the top of the page you can now book flights, hotels, and rental cars RIGHT FROM OUR SITE!!!  We’re extremely excited with this and hope that you will take advantage of it in the future.

In the news this week – Crystal is now offering Windows and Mac classes in their Computer University @ Sea program.

Queen Elizabeth will have a resident theater company onboard.

All eyes in the Caribbean are on St Thomas after gang violence there takes the life of a 14 year old cruise ship passenger.  Our thoughts if you’re headed to St Thomas on a cruise in the next few months – don’t cancel your cruise, but you may want to consider staying onboard the ship.

This week we also chat a bit about getting online during your cruise.  There are a few options and a few things to keep in mind.

Queen Elizabeth To Have Resident Theater Company

Upon QUEEN ELIZABETH’s October 2010 debut, Cunard will introduce an original concept in theatrical entertainment, the Queen Elizabeth Theatre Company – the first and only resident theatre company at sea. Guests will enjoy a brand new repertoire of shows premiered by the Theatre Company’s 29 singers, dancers, actors and musicians.

New shows will include the hit Slice of Saturday Night, a nostalgic pastiche of 1960s music. Adapted especially for the Queen Elizabeth Theatre Company by its original writers, the Heather Brothers, Slice of Saturday Night features all of the Theatre Company members – the largest production show that Cunard has ever staged.

Performing in the ship’s majestic Royal Court Theatre, the Queen Elizabeth Theatre Company will present a compelling variety of musical productions and abridged versions of popular plays such as a Neil Simon triple bill and Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. The Simon show will feature three scenes, one each from some of the playwright’s best-loved shows – Last of the Red Hot Lovers, Plaza Suite and The Odd Couple. At the conclusion of each show, the audience may take part in an informal Q&A session with the actors.

The Mail Buoy Episode 187

After a week off we’re back and couldn’t avoid talking about the situation in the Gulf of Mexico.  So far the spill hasn’t caused any ships to divert from their planned itineraries or delays.

NCL is introducing online pre-reservations for some Norwegian Epic shows.

Cunard unveils the centerpiece of Queen Elizabeth’s grand lobby, and some big names will be sailing on Crystal’s 2011 world cruise.  Meanwhile Seabourn takes delivery of their newest – Seabourn Sojourn.

LA approved funding for improvements to the World Cruise Center, and Carnival Paradise made a slight diversion after a passenger gives birth onboard.

Celebrity may be adding new ships – but in return some older ones are headed off- Celebrity Mercury will be getting a makeover and joining the former Celebrity Zenith as part of the TUI Cruises fleet.
