Cruise West announced two new itineraries sailing on the Mississippi, Ohio, Tennessee, and Cumberland Rivers, starting in March, 2011. These inaugural voyages will take place aboard the Spirit of America, formerly the Spirit of Glacier Bay.

Known to many as America’s Great River Road, the Mississippi is North America’s longest river. For centuries, it has played a major role in commerce as a vital transit route for passengers and freight of every description – including cotton, timber, food, and Appalachian coal. The writings of Mark Twain turned the river into a cultural icon as well. So today, a cruise on the Mississippi is an adventure through history and literature, as well as spectacular vistas.

“This market has been underserved since 2008 with the departure of Majestic Cruise line,” commented Dietmar Wertanzl, Cruise West’s President and CEO. “We are proud to be the only cruise line offering overnight cruises on these great American Rivers.”

Guests will enjoy the iconic South, while sailing the Mississippi River from New Orleans to Memphis, taking in the sights of white mansions, lush gardens, historic plantations, and poignant civil war monuments. In addition to exceptional scenery around every bend, guests on this 7-night itinerary will enjoy all of the following:

Stopping in Vacherie to visit Oak Alley Plantation, the most photographed plantation in the South.

Visiting The Myrtles – “America’s Most Haunted House.”

Discovering the spectacular antebellum and Victorian architecture of picturesque Natchez, Missouri.

Touring Vicksburg National Military Park, scene of the Civil War battle that gave the North control of the Mississippi.

Strolling through Helena, Arkansas – one-time home to no fewer than seven generals of the confederacy.

The second new river voyage – a 7-night excursion further up river – begins and ends with two hotbeds of American music, Memphis and Nashville. Guest will follow the Mississippi north to Cairo, at the confluence of the Ohio River. They will cruise on upriver to the Tennessee and the narrow Cumberland River. On this journey, guests will enjoy:

Exploring the charming and historic town of New Madrid, Missouri.

Taking in numerous galleries and the Center of Maritime Education in Paducah, Kentucky.

Walking through Fort Smith – a Civil War staging area once occupied by Ulysses S. Grant.

Touring Fort Donelson National Battlefield in Dover, Tennessee, site of the first major Union victory.

Discovering Clarksville, Tennessee, one of the South’s most historic cities and home to memorable architecture and attractions.

Between these itineraries, guests may choose from 8 departure dates with prices starting at $3,499 before savings and include all excursions and hotel nights as listed. The New Orleans to Memphis (reverse dates noted with asterisk) dates include March 19, April 9April 16, and May 7, 2011. The Memphis to Nashville dates include March 26 and April 2, 23, 30,2011. Guests can save $600 per person by paying in full by July 30, 2010.

Cruise West is revitalizing the overall guest experience this spring with several significant enhancements collectively called ‘Spirit Of Distinction.’ ‘Compass,’ a more robust enrichment program guided by a world class Board of Advisors, will be introduced for the enjoyment of all guests. The launch of ‘Palate’ Wine & Food Program will include an updated, award-winning wine list with food pairings and United States Sommelier Association certification for onboard servers. Several vessels will also offer the option to dine “alfresco,” and all sailings will enjoy new menu items. The well-appointed new Explorer Class cabin category, replete with upscale, eco-friendly amenities, will be added to three of the lines’ nine ships.

Designed to enhance the overall guest experience through meaningful and topical presentations, the renewed onboard enrichment program, Compass, will be introduced on all Cruise West itineraries. Four tenants comprise the points of Compass: science, culture, history and immersion. The Board of Advisors that will guide the new program includes world-renowned Oceanographer Dr. Don Walsh and noted Naturalist Brent Nixon. In addition, leading experts in diverse fields will serve as guest lecturers to complement the on-board Exploration Leaders’ provided narratives. Enrichment doesn’t end onboard. Guests will have additional opportunities to be immersed into the natural environment through an increased number of zodiac excursions on select itineraries.
A hallmark of the Cruise West experience is engaging and thought-provoking presentations aboard every sailing. The Exploration Academy, a component of Compass, will serve as an enhanced training program for Cruise West Exploration Leaders, further developing their knowledge base and skills. Tools include an e-based Enrichment Program of power point presentation modules that cover such diverse subjects as the culture, history, wildlife and geology of region(s) visited.

Guest won’t whine about the wine list or refreshed menu items! Following the theme of exploration, Cruise West introduces Palate, designed to help diners discover the synergy between wine and food. All Cruise West ships will feature a delectable culinary experience through distinctive food and wine pairings with menu selections that highlight the cuisine of the Pacific Northwest. A tempting wine list featuring bottles selected by Chairman Dick West will include wines from Wine Spectator’s “Top 100 Wines of the World” and Seattle Wine Awards 2008 “Gold Medal Winners.” Additionally, in affiliation with the United States Sommelier Association, onboard servers will participate in a certificate course to ensure service delivery is up to the highest standards.
Lastly, guests will have a choice of three distinct dining options at lunchtime. Alfresco dining will be offered on the Spirit of Oceanus, Spirit of Yorktown, Spirit of Endeavour and Spirit of ’98, weather permitting, in addition to regularly scheduled lunch in the Dining Room and Light Fare luncheon served in the Lounge. Menu items will include fresh grilled favorites, salads, and a carving or taco bar.

The new Explorer Class cabins, formerly AAA cabins, are intended for guests accustomed to a higher level of creature comforts. The “eco-friendly” amenities, a natural extension of the company’s motto of good environmental stewardship, include ultra soft Bamboo (a sustainable resource), fiber linens and towels, cotton waffle weave bathrobes, water conserving Speakman “Easy Jet” adjustable stream showerheads, and hypoallergenic down duvets. In addition to special amenities, guests traveling on Alaska itineraries will receive a copy of the book Mr. Alaska, written by Cruise West’s founder Chuck West. Explorer Class cabins will be rolled out in spring 2009 onboard the 96-guest Spirit of ’98, 102-guest Spirit of Endeavour, and the 138-guest Spirit of Yorktown.

Along the way, they will learn the tales of its early inhabitants and the adventures of pirates and whalers who once traveled to these islands. At Gardner Bay on Hood Island there is ample opportunity to snorkel or enjoy the marine life on a glass bottom boat. At Punta Suarez, guests can walk on lava terrain to visit unique bird colonies including the Waved Albatross.

The highlights of Point Cormorant on Floreana Island include nature hikes to see the flamingos that inhabit a brackish-water lagoon as well as great snorkeling and kayaking opportunities. There is further exploration by panga boats to nearby islets to observe sea lions, rays and sea turtles, boobies and possibly the Galápagos penguin. Tortoises are found on Santa Cruz Island, known for its seven different vegetation zones including Scalesia forests, home to a huge variety of smaller plants, many of them endemic to Galápagos; the site of Los Gemelos; the infamous Charles Darwin Research Station and the giant tortoise pens.

Thousands of frigate birds, red-footed and masked boobies, gulls, herons, finches and mockingbirds are found at the beautiful natural harbor Darwin Bay, Tower Island where adventurers may choose to walk up Princes Philip’s Steps to observe more large bird colonies. After cruising across the Equator line on the Isabela II, anchor at Tagus Cove on Isabela Island where the landscape is tuff-stone and lava flows. Marine iguanas graze on the algae beds, indigenous Galápagos fur seals welcome guests, and snorkelers will explore the bountiful sea life found in the area due to the upwelling of the Cronwell Current. Punta Espinoza, Fernandina Island offers more wildlife including the highest density of marine iguanas, sally lightfoot crabs, hawks, penguins and the flightless cormorant.

More island exploration is found on James and Bartolome Islands before guests disembark and fly to Guayaquil to either travel home or continue on the six-day Cuzco and Machu Picchu post-cruise program.

Add-on Cuzco and Machu Picchu Land Program

The fully guided Peru post-cruise land program includes six days of visits to Cuzco the historical capital of the Inca Empire; and “The Lost City of the Incas,” Machu Picchu, located at 7,875 above sea level. This inclusive program includes guided tours of Cuzco’s most historical monuments and markets; a special dinner of Novo Andina Cuisine (a fusion of Andean ingredients and European techniques); and the comfort of the exclusive five-star Hotel Liberador Palacio del Inca.

Guests travel by Vistadome Train to Aguas Calientes and transfer to the lovely Spanish colonial Inkaterra Machu Picchu Hotel for two nights. There they will spend a day and a half exploring mysterious Machu Picchu, guided or independently. The last night is spent back in Cuzco with tours of the Inca Fortress and Citadel of Ollantaytambo as well as the circular terraces of Moray.

Three departures will be offered on August 23, August 30 and September 6, 2009. The Ecuador and Galápagos Cruise Program begins in Quito and ends in Guayaquil and starts at $6,399 per person, double occupancy including internal flights and the Galápagos National Park Fee. The Cruise Program plus Peru extension, commencing in Guayaquil and ending in Lima, starts at $10,659 per person based on double occupancy including internal airfare in Ecuador and Peru.

According to Seatrade Insider (registration required) Disney Cruise Line is among six operators submitting proposals for 10-year Glacier Bay contracts. The contract terms are from 2010 through 2019.

Disney joined Compagnie des Iles du Ponant, Cruise West, Holland America Line, NCL Corp. and Princess Cruises in submitting proposals to the National Park Service.

The contracts will include the initial allocation of a limited number of vessel use days in the peak Glacier Bay season, June through August, of each year of the contract term.

Princess and Holland America legally qualify as ‘historical operators’ in Glacier Bay, giving them the ability to lock up their existing historical permits, which number 71 of the total 153 available permits annually for the next 10-year contract period. Additionally, Princess holds 13 ‘preferential’ entry permits.

HAL and Princess have the potential to maintain 84 of the peak season entries of the total of 153 available.

Dave Nemeth, chief of concessions management for Glacier Bay National Park, said the National Park Service hopes to allocate the permits by year’s end.

Four Balcony category cabins will be created that will include private teak-floored balconies with enough room for a café table and chairs for two. Numerous additional upgrades will be completed throughout the ship, including redecoration and renovation of public corridors, lobby areas, and the panoramic Observation Lounge, the ship’s Living Room. Updates will be completed in November and December, just in time for the first Sea of Cortés Holiday cruise departing December 22, 2007.The combined cost of all renovations is approximately $2 million.

The four Balcony cabins located on the sun deck will undergo an extensive remodel that includes a new layout and the addition of queen beds, mini refrigerators and private balconies, which will provide sweeping views. New cabinetry, fixtures, carpet, and lighting will be installed in the cabins as well. Discerning guests will enjoy the added comfort and privacy. Several upgrades were implemented spring 2007 to guest areas aboard the Spirit of Yorktown, including new mattresses, carpeting, soft goods and deck furniture.

Additional upgrades to the lounge, where guests enjoy lectures, beverages and congregating with fellow travelers, will be completed in conjunction with the Balcony cabin remodel. The Lounge will receive new and reupholstered furniture, and new carpeting, bookcase, ceiling and lighting. All cabins will also receive new bedspreads and window treatments, and the beautiful original watercolor paintings by renowned artist will be reframed to better display each piece.

The 5-week wetdock begins on October 23, 2007 in Alameda, CA. The ship will welcome guests back on its December 22, 2007 Sea of Cortés Whales & Wildlife cruise round trip from Cabo San Lucas. The Spirit of Yorktown is the first ship to receive new art and upgrades, and others in the Cruise West fleet will follow in the next two years.

For additional information regarding the Spirit of Yorktown cruise itineraries to Alaska, California Wine Country and Mexico’s Sea of Cortés or any of Cruise West’s other destinations and ships, call us at 888-286-9827.

Another week – another show… We’re still playing with the single show format and are still trying to decide which route we’re going to take.

We start this week back peddling from a story we ran last week. Celebrity had announced prior to our recording last week that even though Millenium had suffered propeller damage that disrupted a sailing there were no plans to cancel the July 12 sailing on the Millenium. Right after we posted the show on Monday – Celebrity canceled the July 12 sailing of Millenium.

Cunard has announced that both Queen Mary 2 and Queen Victoria will be sailing World Cruises in 2009.

MSC is extending their kids sail free promotion a little longer.

Cruise West will offer 5 cruises to Costa Rica and Panama later this year, and will rename the Spirit of Nantucket to the Spirit of Glacier Bay when she relocates to the West Coast later this year.

Holland America’s 2008/09 Caribbean itineraries are out, while Regent has completed a fleetwide renovation program and also announced changes to their smoking policy.

Crystal has announced their 2008 value collection sailings, and the keel for Seabourn Odyssey has been laid.

For the feature this week we take a lot at the economics of cruising, in particular the economics of cruising the Mediterranean. With the US Dollar so week against the Euro (and even weaker against the British Pound) Mediterranean cruises become a pretty attractive value. Since you’re paying for your vacation in Dollars not Euros, your protected against currency fluctuations, plus the pricing you see isn’t effected by the beating that the Dollar is currently taking on the world currency markets. We talk about it more in detail, and check out our comparison spreadsheet comparing the costs between a land vacation and a cruise.

The Deal of The Week this week is the cruise that we use for reference in our comparison.

Following the announcement that the Spirit of Nantucket will be repositioned to Alaska in 2008, the small-ship cruise line Cruise West has renamed it to befit its new home. Next year, the 102-guest ship will ply the waters of Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, and, given this itinerary, the name will be officially changed to Spirit of Glacier Bay. A rechristening will occur in Seattle spring 2008 before the ship sails to Alaska. The ship is currently sailing East Coast itineraries through 2007.

“The name Spirit of Glacier Bay not only reflects the itinerary this ship will be sailing, but also celebrates the history of Cruise West and Glacier Bay. Cruise West was one of the pioneers to take guests by ship into this magnificent park, “said Dick West, chairman and managing director. “In 1990, we introduced the 52-guest Spirit of Glacier Bay that sailed a similar itinerary, and this ship was retired in 2001. It just makes sense to reintroduce this name and get back to our roots.”

For the 2008 Alaska season, the Spirit of Glacier Bay will sail three-and four-night Glacier Bay Highlights cruises that will feature two days in Glacier Bay, cruising roundtrip from Juneau. The 4-night cruise also makes a port call at Haines or Skagway. This cruise was previously offered on the 78-guest Spirit of Alaska that will sail the Alaska’s Whales & Wilderness cruise in 2008. Given the high demand for the Glacier Bay Highlights cruises, the additional guest capacity onboard the newly named Spirit of Glacier Bay offers more guests the opportunity to take advantage of this natural wonder.

Cruise West Alaska cruises are offered May through late August, with three Grand Voyages aboard the flagship, Spirit of Oceanus, four itineraries in Alaska’s Inside Passage, and a cruise in Prince William Sound. The company has more permits than any other line to enter the 3.3-million-acre Glacier Bay National Park. For more information, call us at 888-286-9827

This week was another pretty slow week when it came to cruise news, although there were a few stories to talk about this week.

First off was a line that we don’t get to talk about too much, Cruise West is talking about their plans for the 2007 Alaska season which kicks off in the next few weeks. Most notable is the overnights that they offer in Glacier Bay and their guarantee that passengers will see whales during their trip.

Meanwhile Crystal is announcing details of their 2007 Film and Theater festival which will spotlight character actors.

Princess dominated the headlines this week- First was the announcement that they were canceling their planned dual naming ceremony off Santorini. Emerald Princess will now have her ceremony in Athens on Mothers Day weekend, while the naming ceremony for Royal Princess has yet to be rescheduled. Speaking of Royal Princess she entered service this past week, and over on Emerald Princess the new chef’s table is off to a rousing success. Princess has also opened up sailings onboard the ship’s of P&O Cruises Australia to residents of North America. Part of this announcement is that Regal Princess will join the P&O fleet this year as the Pacific Dawn.

Carnival has announced the details of their fourth annual Mind and Body Cruise (December 2-9 onboard Conquest), and they’ve awarded Ecstasy with the Golden Eagle Award for service excellence.

Royal Caribbean has accepted delivery of Liberty of the Seas and Costa has entered in to a strategic partnership with Air France.

Finally, Cruise Planners has purchased International Conferences which specializes in continuing education classes at sea for medical professionals.

The Deal of the Week is off for the next few weeks, and don’t forget we will be too! Seasocks is next week and we’ll probably re-air an earlier show.

The small-ship cruise line Cruise West, with more than 60 years of providing tours in Alaska, will be adding even more adventure opportunities to explore the vast wilderness, geography and cultures of America’s last frontier for the 2007 season. Guests will now be able to spend two nights in Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, and choose from four new shore excursions added to the already long list of adventures on land.

Cruise West has the distinct advantage of possessing more permits than any other cruise line to enter Glacier Bay National Park, a 3.3-million-acre wonderland. Six of the line’s itineraries in Alaska visit this majestic gem, and this year guests can extend their stay in the park to two nights on the Wilderness Inside Passage itinerary. During this added time, guests will explore the birds and sea lions of South Marble Island, the 15,000-foot peak of Mt. Fairweather, and massive glaciers of all varieties, all while under the expert guidance of a National Park Ranger and Native Cultural Interpreter. Cruise West will also offer more departures on this itinerary with two ships rather than one: the 84-guest Spirit of Discovery and the 102-guest Spirit of Endeavour. Yet another advantage with this itinerary is the line’s steadfast Whale Sighting Guarantee; should whales not be spotted on a sailing, the line will refund $250 to each guest – a price that the line has never had to pay.

You’ll find more information about Cruise West and their 2007 Alaska itineraries below, or call us at 888-286-9827 to book one of these unique voyages.

In addition to the included activity or excursion in all of the ports that Cruise West’s seven Alaska-sailing ships visit, guests can choose from an extensive array of add-on adventures. For the 2007 season, Cruise West has announced four new shore excursions:

While spending two nights in Glacier Bay on the Wilderness Inside Passage itinerary, guests can also explore the park, on shore, with a guided hike through the vast terrain.

In the capital city of Juneau, guests can take their adventures to new heights with the Rainforest Canopy and Zipline Adventure, an eco-tour combining the thrill of gliding above the treetops in a rich rainforest on more than 6,000 feet of dual zip lines, suspension bridges, and a ground-based trail network. Participants will cross the Gastineau Channel aboard an expedition craft, mountain ascent in an off-road vehicle, and explore hidden relics of a world-famous gold mine.

A new component of the popular tour of Jewell Gardens in Skagway is a hands-on tour of the only public glass-blowing studio in Alaska. Visitors will observe professionals at work and have the opportunity to blow or mold their own piece as a special memento of their visit to southeast Alaska.

Guests can visit the Saxman Native Village, known for its Totem poles, in Ketchikan and experience the rich living culture of Southeast Alaska’s Native Americans on an exclusive tour with Native Tlingit and Mayor of Saxman, Joe Williams. Stop at the carving shed to see totem poles in their making and visit a traditional Tribal House.

Cruise West travels in Alaska from May through early-September. The line’s flagship, the 120-guest Spirit of Oceanus, offers three Grand Voyages, which sail from Vancouver to the Russian Far East. Four itineraries are offered in Alaska’s Inside Passage, including a shorter getaway, Glacier Bay Highlights. An itinerary is also offered in Prince William Sound, a 3,500-mile shoreline filled with hidden islands and enfolded fjords that are only accessible by small ships.

Cruise West has once again set new standards for guest experiences in the “Great Land.” All of their trademark land-based Exploration Leaders and land-tour drivers in Alaska recently completed the National Association of Interpretation’s Certified Interpretive Guide (CIG) course, making Cruise West the first cruising company to receive this certification. The program gives these guides the tools to improve the interpretive education and experience obtained on the land tours, providing added value and a more meaningful connection to the region for those guests who travel with Cruise West on any Alaska adventure.

The 32-hour course trains guides in the basics of theme-based presentations, improving skills to tailor lectures to different audiences and respond to questions. Guides learn to construct tours to make the excursion enjoyable, relevant, organized and thematic. This certification enables Cruise West guides to emotionally and intellectually connect guests to the area that they are visiting within Alaska, while continuing to respect the biodiversity and cultural diversity of the regions. Guests can trust that they will gain a thorough understanding and background of the area with a skilled guide, whether on a city tour of Ketchikan or exploring the backcountry of Denali National Park, adding greater value to traveling with Cruise West.

Cruise West continues to invest in tour enhancement and interpretation. The Exploration Leaders and managers have trained with the National Association of Interpretation (NAI) for five years. Cruise West’s Southeast Regional Manager Larry Johansen completed CIG training and the “Train the Trainer” course. Special guest speakers are also integrated in Cruise West land tours in various communities throughout Alaska.

After a few slow news days things seemed to have picked up dramatically. Even better, we’ve got news from Cruise West, a company we don’t get to talk about to much.

Cruise West, which features smaller cruise ships has announced this past week that they have acquired the Yankee Clipper and Nantucket Clipper from Clipper Cruise Lines. These coastal cruise ships will sail the 2006 itineraries on the East Coast, Great Lakes, Caribbean, Alaska, Mexico and Central America previously published by Clipper Cruise Line, but under Cruise West ownership and management.

More information about the new ships and Cruise West’s announcement about their new ships after the jump. If you’d like to book a Cruise West cruise or get more information about Cruise West, be sure to contact Cruise Planners at www.mycruiseplanner.net

CRUISE WEST ANNOUNCES ADDITION OF NEW SHIPS AND ITINERARIES Yorktown Clipper and Nantucket Clipper to Expand Line Operations
Seattle, WA, January 17, 2006 – Cruise West, the preeminent American-owned and operated small-ship cruise line, announced today that it has acquired the Yorktown Clipper and the Nantucket Clipper, previously part of the Clipper Cruise Line fleet. With the increasing success of Cruise West and the projected profitability over the course of upcoming years, this planned expansion comes at an ideal time to again raise the bar of small-ship cruising experiences, as Cruise West has often done before.

The 138-guest Yorktown Clipper and the 102-guest Nantucket Clipper have officially joined the Cruise West family today. Both ships are U.S.-flagged coastal cruise ships joining Cruise West’s fleet of American-owned vessels, and will significantly enhance the company’s operational reach. The new ships will sail the 2006 itineraries on the East Coast, Great Lakes, Caribbean, Alaska, Mexico and Central America previously published by Clipper Cruise Line, but under Cruise West ownership and management. Guest programs and amenities will offer the comfortable and modern accommodations of these former Clipper small ships with the distinguished exploration approach that Cruise West has so successfully pioneered.

Chairman and CEO Dick West said, “We are delighted to expand our operations to the East Coast and to offer our guests novel itineraries in the up-close, casual, and personal style of cruising that have branded our ships for over 60 years. Cruise West’s fleet, now consisting of 10 diverse ships, will completely circle North and Central America and the entire Pacific Rim.”

President and COO Jeffrey Krida said, “Over the past four years, Cruise West’s careful management has allowed us to steadily strengthen our balance sheet and market position. We have already projected 2006 to be the strongest financial year in our company’s history. This consolidation with Clipper Cruise Line’s domestic vessels into an already impressive fleet will allow Cruise West to scale new heights. We appreciate the dynamic sales support from the travel community and we look forward to continued work with our travel partners in creating strides in the small-ship cruising industry.”

Cruise West is the largest American small-ship cruise line and will now be operating 10 vessels accommodating 70 to 138 guests on itineraries in Alaska, Mexico, Costa Rica, on the Columbia River, in California Wine Country, the South Pacific, and Japan. This expansion will also increase the destinations that Cruise West guests can travel to with the new vessels’ previously scheduled itineraries to the East Coast of the Americas, Great Lakes and Caribbean.

Cruise West – a second-generation, family-owned business – offers the opportunity to explore remote locales by providing distinctive, one-of-a-kind, personalized itineraries not offered by the traditional larger cruise lines. The casual style onboard encourages relaxation and congenial interaction between guests and crew alike.

The emphasis for all Cruise West destinations is outward on the history, local cultures, shoreside attractions, and on personal service. The cruising style offers flexible schedules allowing intimate encounters with wildlife, scenery and with like-minded guests. Zodiacs and other excursion crafts offer access to wilderness shorelines. Each ship features Cruise West Exploration Leaders who are experts in the natural history, biology and lore of the destination. For more information call toll-free 1-800-888-9378.

Cruise West is a family-owned small-ship cruise line based in Seattle and headed by Richard G. West, chairman and CEO. The company was founded in 1973 by Charles B. (Chuck) West, whose legacy in Alaska travel stretches back to 1946.

Destinations served: Alaska and the Bering Sea, British Columbia, Columbia and Snake Rivers, California Wine Country, Baja Mexico’s Sea of Cortés, and Costa Rica/Panama.

The emphasis for all Cruise West destinations is outward on scenery, wildlife, history, local cultures, and shoreside attractions. The cruising style is up-close, casual and personal, with flexible schedules allowing intimate encounters with wildlife. Zodiacs and other excursion craft offer access to wilderness shorelines. Each ship features Cruise West Exploration Leaders who are trained in the natural history and lore of the destination.

Ships: The company owns and operates eight small ships–seven cruise ships, with capacities ranging from 78 to 114 guests, and a 90-foot touring yacht. Each of the overnight vessels has a comfortable forward lounge, substantial outside deck space, private facilities in all cabins, and a dining room that seats a full complement of guests at a single sitting. Open seating in dining rooms helps travelers meet and come to know one another. Dining is more sophisticated than is typically associated with small-ship expedition cruising. The motoryacht Sheltered Seas has two carpeted lounges and a beverage bar. The lower-deck lounge converts into a dining room. All ships have bow thrusters for maneuvering close to shore. Passengers are welcome on the bridge. Most ships are American-built and registered and are crewed by Americans, except for the line’s flagship, the Bahamas-registered Spirit of Oceanus, and the Honduras-registered Pacific Explorer in Costa Rica.
