NASA Astronauts to Join 2009 Regent World Cruise

Posted by Michael on 04/03/08

Regent Seven Seas Cruises, voted the “#1 Small-Ship Cruise Line” in Condé Nast Traveler’s 2007 Readers’ Choice Awards poll, will offer guests the opportunity to travel with National Aeronautical and Space Administration (NASA) astronauts Edgar Mitchell and Charles Duke, two of the 12 individuals to have ever set foot on the moon’s surface. These genuine American heroes will be the featured guests aboard the 700-guest, all-suite, all-balcony Seven Seas Voyager® which will depart April 18, 2009 for a 20-day Istanbul to Fort Lauderdale voyage, the final segment of its 116-night Grand Circumnavigation World Cruise.

“As men whose accomplishments have contributed significantly to our collective scientific knowledge, we are honored to host Drs. Mitchell and Duke aboard our 2009 World Cruise,” said Mark Conroy, president of Regent Seven Seas. “Because our World Cruise travelers are united by a passion for exploration and discovery, we are pleased to present distinguished experts from various fields of endeavor to enrich the guest experience.”

“We went to the moon as technicians, we returned humanitarians,” said Dr. Mitchell of the 1971 mission in which he piloted the Apollo 14 lunar module and became the sixth man to walk on the moon. Together with Apollo 14 commander Alan Shepard, Mitchell holds the record for the longest-ever moonwalk (9 hours and 17 minutes), and he traveled further on the moon’s surface than anyone else. As a scientist, naval officer, astronaut, entrepreneur, author and lecturer, Dr. Mitchell’s extraordinary career exemplifies humankind’s eternal quest to broaden its horizons. A member of the Astronaut Hall of Fame, Dr. Mitchell has received numerous honors including the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Charles Duke served as lunar module pilot of Apollo 16, the first expedition to survey the moon’s rugged Descartes region of lunar highlands. In 1972, he became the 10th and youngest man ever to walk on the moon, in a mission that set a record for the longest lunar surface stay, totaling 71 hours and 14 minutes. He has since become a sought-after motivational speaker, and author of the book Moonwalker. Dr. Duke is a recipient of the NASA Distinguished Service Medal. Seven Seas Voyager’s full 2009 Grand Circumnavigation World Cruise will depart January 12 from Los Angeles and offer seven segments, each with a choice of diverse Concierge Collection land adventures and enlightening onboard activities and lecture programs. The segments include:

Per-person rates range from $64,995 (with Early Booking Savings) to $224,995 for the full Grand Circumnavigation World Cruise, and start at $7,995 for individual segments.

Cruise fares include all shipboard gratuities; exclusive gifts and special events; complimentary beverages, including select wines and spirits served throughout the ship; complimentary 24-hour room service; in-suite bar setup in butler suites; and refrigerator stocked with soft drinks, beer and bottled water replenished daily.

Regent Revamps Entertainment Lineup for Rest of Year

Posted by Michael on 03/31/08

Regent Seven Seas Cruises has completed a multi-million dollar upgrade of entertainment programming aboard three of its ships, including the addition of professional ballroom dance teams, new productions featuring “The Regent Singers and Dancers,” and the largest live orchestra aboard any luxury cruise line.

In celebration of the ballroom dance craze sweeping the nation thanks to “Dancing with the StarsTM” and other programs, several of the new shows feature professional ballroom couples performing original choreography showcasing Latin, swing, waltz and other dance styles. The dancers even offer complimentary lessons for guests on days at sea.

The nine-piece “Regent Signature Orchestra” performs aboard 700-guest all-suite, all-balcony Seven Seas Mariner® and Seven Seas Voyager®, and 490-guest, all-suite Seven Seas Navigator®.  This talented unit lends concert-quality musical support to production shows and breaks into smaller units for combo performances around the ships, allowing late-night cocktails or afternoon tea in one of the lounges to be complemented by the mellow sounds of a live jazz trio.

The new shows include new cabaret revues and five new feature productions for each ship, all with live music by the orchestra and a permanent cast of up to 10 singers and dancers (shorter cruises typically feature three production shows; longer cruises feature four or five).  A new highlight aboard Seven Seas Mariner and Seven Seas Navigator this year is the musical “Breaking Up is Hard to Do,” with music by legendary singer-songwriter Neil Sedaka, whose signature tenor voice produced a string of Billboard hits in the 1950s and 60s. Seven Seas Voyager features another show, “Romance Romance,” for added variety and texture.

In addition to the new shows, Regent will continue to offer a roster of headline entertainers throughout the year, as well as specialty programs like “James Bond Martini Night,” “Beatles Night,” a live disco show and all-new production shows tailored to each ship.

The Mail Buoy Episode 103

Posted by Michael on 03/17/08

We have a few automotive weekends coming up and as a result I try a very bad impression of Jeremy Clarkson of Top Gear, however I’m not very good at it and as a result Patricia launches us right into the news.

We get started with several NCL stories: Norwegian Majesty is getting a new itinerary, Freestyle 2.0 launches March 30, and we’ve got a few hints as to what’s in store for NCL’s F3 ships.

The US Coast Guard was searching for a woman that reportedly jumped from the Costa Mediterranea last Monday.

Royal Caribbean will be refunding fuel surcharges for many guests as part of a settlement they reached with the Florida Attorney General - and Carnival may do the same soon.  Regent is announcing a fuel surcharge as well.

Crystal’s introducing some super deluxe excursions.

Caribbean Princess is heading back to New York for the summer of 2009.

Silversea has announced the name for their newest ship and also that Silver Cloud and Silver Wind will be getting extensive refurbishments.

Regent adds a Fuel Surcharge

Posted by Patricia on 03/14/08

(I so desperately want to sub-title this one: “How to add a fuel surcharge properly)

Here’s the notice from Regent:

Due to the unprecedented and continued rise of fuel costs around the world - that could not have been anticipated when pricing was set - Regent Seven Seas Cruises will implement a cruise ship fuel surcharge on 2009 sailings.

The surcharge of $7.50 per person per day will only be assessed on NEW 2009 bookings beginning April 1, 2008. Any deposited 2009 booking prior to that date will not be assessed the surcharge. This allows you two weeks to book and deposit a 2009 cruise without being assessed the surcharge.
