Norwegian Jade Entertainment Offerings Announced

Posted by Michael on 04/24/08

Norwegian JadeNorwegian Jade’s new entertainment includes four new off-Broadway musicals, the legendary show phenomenon Tony n Tina’s Wedding, an expanded The Second City comedy show, and a classical dance production by award-winning choreographer Twyla Tharp. In addition, Norwegian Jade is the first NCL ship to feature Freestyle 2.0 enhancements, including all new menus in the restaurants, upgraded bedding and enhanced on-board activities programming, including NCL “U” enrichment classes, themed parties, sports programming and enhanced youth programs.

On Norwegian Jade, NCL has replaced the traditional cruise director with both a master of ceremonies and a guest activities director. The master of ceremonies is a professional entertainer who hosts all evening events while the guest activities director coordinates the ship’s daytime activities. In addition, the entertainment scheduling has been changed to allow guests more flexibility and choice each evening. The nighttime production shows are offered twice per cruise, but only one performance per evening, in contrast to the traditional offering of one production show being offered twice per night. This provides guests the option of catching a show later in the cruise if they miss the first performance. In addition, most evenings there is a second show performed that includes acrobatics, action comedy and magic. To enhance the performance, all shows are performed live with the accompaniment of the Norwegian Jade orchestra.

These offerings really aren’t anything new to NCL. Abridged versions of Broadway plays were a staple of NCL entertainment in the 90’s and early 00’s, Second City has been on their cruises out of NYC for years, they’ve even done dinner theater in the past. Most of what’s listed is more or less tried and true for NCL. What is interesting is how much they’re packing into one cruise. I welcome the change, cruise ship entertainment gets a bad rap for a reason. But I have to wonder, how well will tony and tina’s wedding translate to Europeans audiences found in higher percentages on these cruises? I think the crowd’s reaction would be the best part!

As for replacing the traditional cruise director, Disney tried this when they first started their line and quickly ended up following the status quo. I have a horrible feeling we’ll all be hearing “a passenger asked me what elevation the ship is at” for years to come.

never having travelled wih ncl before am curious to know do they have ballroom dancing on board and do they employ dance hosts as most of the ships ive been on do

  3. Malcolm Says:

Jade had ballroom dancing on my recent (30/5/08) med cruise from Sothampton - but mutch of it was done to a small band of drums, Keybords and singer in the medusa lounge: but not a proper big band.

The production shows (Theatre) which were too American for my taste were all performed to TAPED music!
