New Menus Coming to Holland America

Posted by Michael on 01/17/08

From coconut scallops in the Caribbean and Spanish tapas in the Mediterranean to chicken mole in Mexico, guests sailing aboard Holland America Line’s premium cruise ships in 2008 will savor new menus reflecting their ship’s current itinerary. Master Chef Rudi Sodamin has incorporated flavors, techniques and recipes from around the world on new menus fleetwide. Menus are changing to reflect the ship’s sailing itinerary, and local foods are brought on board to better reflect the regional cuisine. The new Mexico and Caribbean menus are the first to debut and are available now on ships sailing those itineraries.

Fresh fish will be brought on board in the Caribbean and Mexico along with local produce such as chayote, bread fruit, guava and fresh Mexican chiles. Island spices, local fish and produce, and Sodamin’s knowledge of local specialties spice up the menu.  On the Mexico itinerary, a guest might dine on Chicken mole, a Mexican regional specialty.  In the Caribbean, the recipe changes to Caribbean jerk-style chicken.

Other sample dishes include: chili-rubbed tuna brochette, chilled West Indian lassi soup, mahi mahi with roasted corn salsa and plantains, Mexican tortilla soup with mushrooms, and guava stuffed chicken.

In an effort to enhance the fine dining experience on board, Sodamin will continue to introduce new menus as the ships change sailing destinations.  He’s developing new menus for Northern and Southern Europe, as well as other destinations.  On European itineraries, guests can enjoy prosciutto and coppa from Italy, Spanish tapas, Mediterranean olive oils and produce, artisanal cheeses and Norwegian salmon.   Alaskan sailings will continue to feature wild Alaskan seafood.

Dinner menus in the main dining room have been redesigned with a fresh, modern look. A list of starters includes appetizers, soups and salads.  Next is an entrée section, followed by Chef Rudi Sodamin’s recommendations for the day.  A selection of entrées available daily includes favorites such as Caesar salad and New York strip steak.  Wine and champagne recommendations appear at the bottom of the menu.

Guests on board may choose to dine in a variety of venues, from a quick bite poolside to a formal five-course affair. Every ship features an elegant main dining room; sophisticated Pinnacle Grill where guests can sample Sterling Silver beef and fresh seafood; the casual indoor-outdoor Lido Restaurant, and the Terrace Grill on deck for lunchtime fare.

The Mail Buoy Episode 92

So to make up for not having a show last week we’re doing two shows this week

Although to mix it up a bit we’re not talking about cruises, but rather airlines.  In particular we talk about our recent flight on start-up Virgin America.  Taking the same strategy as JetBlue and positioning themselves as a low cost but not low frills.  Now, despite the Virgin branding, Virgin America is not a US version of Virgin Atlantic.  The airlines are separate entities and Virgin Atlantic’s owner, Sir Richard Branson, is a very minority investor in Virgin America.

Overall, the experience wasn’t bad.  But this is still a relatively new airline and there are still a few kinks that need working out, not the least of which with their entertainment system that they call “Red.”

That being said, if you’re flying somewhere served by Virgin America you should consider them.

The Deal of The Week is still on hiatus, but we expect it to be back next week.

Voyager of the Seas Arrives in Galveston

Posted by Michael on 01/14/08

Voyager of The SeasEverything is bigger in Texas and the next biggest thing in the Lone Star State is Royal Caribbean International’s Voyager of the Seas. The largest cruise ship ever to be based in the Gulf Coast and to sail from the Port of Galveston, Voyager will sail seven-night itineraries visiting the Caribbean, South America and Mexico calling on Cozumel, Costa Maya and Yucatan, Mexico; Roatan, Honduras; Montego Bay, Jamaica; and George Town, Grand Cayman through April 2008.

At a ceremony held onboard Voyager of the Seas yesterday, special guests, including local dignitaries, travel agents and media gathered to celebrate the arrival of the ship which was adorned with gigantic longhorns, 140 feet long and weighing 600 pounds. Following the ceremony, Royal Caribbean kicked off a week-long charity auction on eBay (www.ebay.com/longhorns) with proceeds benefiting the Starlight Starbright Children’s Foundation (www.starlight.org), which helps seriously ill children and their families cope with their pain, fear and isolation through entertainment, education and family activities. The highest bidder will win the longhorns and a seven-night cruise for two.

Hey look a new show! :D

It had always been our intention to record a show last week.  Unfortunately we were hit by an illness just hours before our normal recording time, and things didn’t get back to normal until almost mid-week.

To make up for missing last week - we offer you two shows this week.  As the new year started the was quite a bit of news in the cruise industry and we thought there was too much to just do one show.  Even so there were several stories that we posted on the site that didn’t make it in to the show.

Some of the stories we talked about this week -

New check in policies coming - Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Azamara and NCL  have announced their changes, other lines to announce changes over the next month.   Bottom line- by February 19 all cruise lines will require you to be checked in for your cruise at least 60 minutes prior to the scheduled departure time.

Carnival has announced new minimum ages and has revised their policy regarding pregnant passengers.

Crystal is tighten their smoking rules, and Disney is introducing a new show on Disney Wonder.

Royal Caribbean has a new show coming to  Explorer of The Seas, and they will have trans-fats removed from their ships over the course of the next few weeks.  They’ve also renewed their operating agreement with the Port of Galveston.

Also SeaSocks folks should start watching their mailboxes for their invoices - they should be arriving later this week.

No Deal of The Week this week, but we expect that it will be back for next week.
