Sea Diamond Cleanup to Begin in 10 Days According to ekathimerini, the cleanup of the 430 tons of diesel fuel remaining onboard the sunken Sea Diamond should begin in 10 days. A plan to remove the fuel was approved on the 18th, and it's expected that it will take 2 months to pump all of the fuel off the ship. So far there hasn't been any environmental damage due to the ship's sinking, however local officials are concerned that the ship could be shifted by the local tides ripping a hole in the fuel tanks. As a result, they are urging Greek maritime officials to act faster to remove the fuel from the wreck. In addition, it's expected to be a month before Greek officials can examine the data that was on the ship's data recorder. The device has been sent to the US for decrypting.

Princess Changes Plans for Emerald Princess and Royal Princess Naming Princess CruisesOut of respect for the tragic sinking of the Greek cruise ship off the coast in Santorini, the naming ceremonies of the new Emerald Princess and Royal Princess - previously scheduled to take place in the same location - have been changed to different dates and ports. Princess had been planning to simultaneously name both ships in a historic dual ceremony in Santorini on May 12. Emerald Princess will now be christened on Mother's Day in Athens on May 13, and the new date and location for the Royal Princess festivities will be announced shortly. "Given the great shock and sadness this incident has caused, and out of the respect for those affected, we have decided that it would not be appropriate to continue with the celebrations we had planned in Santorini," said Alan Buckelew, president of Princess Cruises. "Our thoughts are with all those affected, especially the family of the two missing French passengers." Buckelew added, "However we're quite pleased to continue with our original plans to reunite a pair of television's favorite mothers and daughters for the christening of Emerald Princess." Television icons Florence Henderson, best known as "Carol Brady" on The Brady Bunch, and Marion Ross, aka "Marion Cunningham" of Happy Days fame and their TV daughters, Susan Olsen ("Cindy Brady") and Erin Moran ("Joanie Cunningham") will all be aboard Emerald Princess in Athens to officially welcome her into the Princess fleet.

Character Actors the Focus of Crystals 2007 Film and Theater Festival

Crystal Cruises

Crystal Cruises is paying tribute to character actors: the villains, sidekicks, familiar faces and unforgettable characters who have made their mark on film and theatre history. Aboard the luxury line's August 31 Film & Theatre Festival voyage on Crystal Symphony, the tribute features noted actor Bruce McGill, along with theatre lecturers, producer Steven Rivellino and author and historian Robert Kimball. A departure from the typical crossing, the 14-day trans-Atlantic cruise boasts port calls in Dublin, Ireland; Reykjavik, Iceland; Nuuk, Greenland; and Halifax, Nova Scotia. Learn more about the actors who will be featured onboard by clicking below, or call us at 888-286-9827 for more information or to book your cabin. Bruce McGill's film resume includes pivotal roles in Cinderella Man, Collateral and The Insider, among dozens of others. In addition to McGill's work, the ship will screen films of other great scene-stealers, complemented by pre- and post-movie commentary by an expert moderator. Film and theatre enthusiasts will also be treated to stimulating panel discussions, insightful lectures, daily movie trivia contests and a social "name that movie tune" cocktail party. "Many of our guests have a sophisticated eye for the impact a gifted actor can bring to the stage and screen," says Bret Bullock, Crystal's vice president, entertainment. "Crystal Cruises' tribute to character acting is sure to spark lively debates regarding favorite actors, special films and winning theatre productions." Known for character roles in more that 100 films and television programs, Bruce McGill has been featured in My Cousin Vinny, Courage Under Fire, The Insider and Ali, and numerous TV appearances including a regular guest starring role on the hit series MacGyver. More recently, he appeared in Collateral, Cinderella Man, and in the just-released The Lookout and Slow Burn (both in theatres now). McGill will share his personal story of nearly 30 years in the industry, as well as discuss the motion picture industry from silent films to the digital age and biographical sketches of famous stars. As vice president and general manager of Radio City Music Hall, producer Steven Rivellino has produced The Grammy Awards, MTV Music Video Awards, and the world-famous Christmas Spectacular, as well as concerts starring Frank Sinatra and Madonna. Currently preparing Rizoma to open on Broadway next season, Rivellino will share insights on "The Business of Broadway Trends," "Tonys and Tickets" and "Radio City Music Hall, the Showplace of the Nation." Renowned theatre historian, author, and Grammy Award nominee Robert Kimball is artistic adviser to both the Gershwin Trusts and the Cole Porter Trusts, and a consultant on musical theatre to the Library of Congress. He will regale Crystal guests with talks on Berlin cabaret, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, the Gershwins in Hollywood, and the music of Frank Loesser. Fares begin at $4,745 per person, double occupancy, depending on stateroom selected. Embarking in London and concluding in New York, this voyage offers the perfect chance for a pre- and/or post-hotel stay for guests wishing to catch a Broadway show or theatre production in London's famed West End.

Cruise West to Offer Overnights in Glacier Bay for 2007 The small-ship cruise line Cruise West, with more than 60 years of providing tours in Alaska, will be adding even more adventure opportunities to explore the vast wilderness, geography and cultures of America’s last frontier for the 2007 season. Guests will now be able to spend two nights in Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, and choose from four new shore excursions added to the already long list of adventures on land.

Cruise West has the distinct advantage of possessing more permits than any other cruise line to enter Glacier Bay National Park, a 3.3-million-acre wonderland. Six of the line’s itineraries in Alaska visit this majestic gem, and this year guests can extend their stay in the park to two nights on the Wilderness Inside Passage itinerary. During this added time, guests will explore the birds and sea lions of South Marble Island, the 15,000-foot peak of Mt. Fairweather, and massive glaciers of all varieties, all while under the expert guidance of a National Park Ranger and Native Cultural Interpreter. Cruise West will also offer more departures on this itinerary with two ships rather than one: the 84-guest Spirit of Discovery and the 102-guest Spirit of Endeavour. Yet another advantage with this itinerary is the line’s steadfast Whale Sighting Guarantee; should whales not be spotted on a sailing, the line will refund $250 to each guest – a price that the line has never had to pay.

You'll find more information about Cruise West and their 2007 Alaska itineraries below, or call us at 888-286-9827 to book one of these unique voyages.

In addition to the included activity or excursion in all of the ports that Cruise West’s seven Alaska-sailing ships visit, guests can choose from an extensive array of add-on adventures. For the 2007 season, Cruise West has announced four new shore excursions:

  • While spending two nights in Glacier Bay on the Wilderness Inside Passage itinerary, guests can also explore the park, on shore, with a guided hike through the vast terrain.
  • In the capital city of Juneau, guests can take their adventures to new heights with the Rainforest Canopy and Zipline Adventure, an eco-tour combining the thrill of gliding above the treetops in a rich rainforest on more than 6,000 feet of dual zip lines, suspension bridges, and a ground-based trail network. Participants will cross the Gastineau Channel aboard an expedition craft, mountain ascent in an off-road vehicle, and explore hidden relics of a world-famous gold mine.
  • A new component of the popular tour of Jewell Gardens in Skagway is a hands-on tour of the only public glass-blowing studio in Alaska. Visitors will observe professionals at work and have the opportunity to blow or mold their own piece as a special memento of their visit to southeast Alaska.
  • Guests can visit the Saxman Native Village, known for its Totem poles, in Ketchikan and experience the rich living culture of Southeast Alaska’s Native Americans on an exclusive tour with Native Tlingit and Mayor of Saxman, Joe Williams. Stop at the carving shed to see totem poles in their making and visit a traditional Tribal House.

Cruise West travels in Alaska from May through early-September. The line’s flagship, the 120-guest Spirit of Oceanus, offers three Grand Voyages, which sail from Vancouver to the Russian Far East. Four itineraries are offered in Alaska’s Inside Passage, including a shorter getaway, Glacier Bay Highlights. An itinerary is also offered in Prince William Sound, a 3,500-mile shoreline filled with hidden islands and enfolded fjords that are only accessible by small ships.
