The Mail Buoy Episode 39

Posted by Michael on 01/29/07

Just one long show this week folks. If you’re a fan of the two shows we apologize, but this was a long week for us so we were a little beat when it came time to record. This past week was our last wedding show so we expect to have two shows up again next week.

There wasn’t a lot of news this past week, however Princess Cruises did a pretty good job of dominating the headlines for the week.

First we had the story that Princess would be shutting their generators down when visiting the Port of Los Angeles in 2008. The Port will be providing electrical power to visiting ships that are capable of connecting to the power system.

Princess also announced new Alaska tours and shore excursions. As promised you can find the entire list of new tours and excursions here. Call us at 888-286-9827 for information about ALL of Princess’s Alaska tours and excursions.

Princess will be paying a fine for a whale strike that occurred back in 2001.

Crystal as eliminated all trans-fats across both their passenger and crew menus.

Meanwhile Royal Caribbean’s Majesty of The Seas is halfway through a month long drydock in the Bahamas.

This week we also talk a bit about what to pack as you prepare to embark on your cruise and we also have a suggestion or two about how to pack as you’re getting ready to disembark.

Don’t forget to check out the details on the new Fall Fiber Frenzy cruise, all of the late breaking details will get posted here.

This week’s Deal of The Week is a last minute deal onboard Carnival. Be sure to check it out before it’s too late!

As always you can find the show in iTunes, on Digg, and you can always use the links below to download the show or play it right in your browser window.

New Date for Debut of Silversea Privileged Passage

Posted by Michael on 01/29/07

Silversea Cruises

Ultra-luxury cruise operator Silversea has announced a new ship and sailing date for the launch of its Privileged Passage program.  The innovative concept is now scheduled for roll-out on a test basis aboard Silver Cloud’s July 13, 2007 cruise, sailing seven days from Athens to Istanbul.  The line had previously announced it would debut in April aboard a ten-day Silver Whisper voyage.

“We realized a shorter voyage would be a better fit for the kind of active-lifestyle travelers we’re targeting,” said David Morris, Silversea’s executive vice president of sales and marketing for North America.  “Privileged Passage is designed to offer optimal flexibility, so it only makes sense to test it out on a shorter cruise, one that’s more convenient for busy professionals to fit into their schedules.”

Privileged Passage will debut aboard Silver Cloud’s July 13, 2007 voyage (#1718).  This unique, ultra-inclusive 7-day cruise will journey from Athens to Istanbul with calls in Mykonos, Santorini, Rhodes, Patmos and Kusadasi.  Early Booking Incentive fares start at $5,350 per person.

Find out more about Silversea’s Privileged Passage and who will be onboard by clicking on “more.”  Call us at 888-286-9827 to book onboard.

NCL Signs Environmental Agreement with Port of Los Angeles

Posted by Michael on 01/29/07

Norwegian Cruise LinesFurthering NCL’s continued commitment to the environment, NCL Corporation has signed a multi-year agreement with the Port of Los Angeles that includes several measures designed to support the port’s clean air initiatives.

As of Jan. 1, NCL’s Norwegian Star, which is homeported in Los Angeles, has been using only low-sulfur fuel (with less than 0.05 percent sulfur) while at the Port of Los Angeles. Norwegian Star is also participating in the port’s Vessel Speed Reduction Program which limits air emissions by slowing ships to 12 knots or less when within 40 nautical miles of the port.

In addition, NCL will utilize Alternative Maritime Power (AMP) on its vessels when it becomes available to cruise ships at the port in 2008. AMP, more widely known as shore power or “cold ironing”, allows vessels to turn off their diesel-burning engines while docked and plug into cleaner, shore side electrical power, reducing air emissions while in port.

“We applaud the Port of Los Angeles for their forward-thinking environmental initiatives,” said Colin Veitch, president and CEO of NCL Corporation. “We are pleased to be in the forefront of port users in implementing the port’s eco-friendly measures.”

NCL has completed the initial technical modifications necessary to allow Norwegian Star to plug into the port’s AMP program. The second phase, which includes the installation of the plug-in switchboard, is scheduled to take place by the end of the year. Depending on the size of the ship, estimates are that AMP will reduce nitrogen oxides (NOx) by one ton and take more than half a ton of sulfur oxides (SOx) out of the air each day a ship is at berth and plugged in.

“The only way to clean the air in and around the Port of Los Angeles is to continue pushing the envelope in reaching new environmental agreements with our partner tenants,” said Geraldine Knatz, Port of Los Angeles executive director. “We are very excited about the positive impact of this agreement and we look forward to working closely with NCL as we move forward.”

Norwegian Star sails eight-day Mexican Riviera itineraries from Los Angeles January through April 2007 and October 2007 through April 2008.
