Crown Princess Update

Posted by Michael on 07/20/06

The following statement was released by Princess Cruises at 2PM Pacific time.

Crown Princess departed Port Canaveral today for New York at approximately 5:00 pm EST, having received clearance from the U.S. Coast Guard, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the British flag authorities to sail. We are confident there are no mechanical or ongoing operational issues that would compromise the safety of the ship, passengers or crew. Crown Princess is expected to arrive at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal at 8:30 am on Saturday, July 22. At approximately mid-day, passengers will begin embarking for a revised seven-day sailing which will depart at 5 pm that afternoon. The cruise will call at the ports of Grand Turk and Bermuda before returning to New York on July 29 to resume its regular nine-day cruise schedule. No passengers are traveling aboard Crown Princess as it sails to New York, as they have all now disembarked in Port Canaveral. We wish to again express our sincerest apologies to our passengers and crew for this regrettable incident, and also extend our thanks for their understanding and cooperation during these difficult circumstances.

Carnival Endows $10 Million to Miami Performing Arts Center

Posted by Michael on 07/20/06

The Miami Herald is reporting that Carnival Corp has contributed $10 million to the Miami Performing Arts Center.  This is in addition to the $10 million they have already contributed for the naming rights to the concert hall at the Performing Arts Center.  In return the facility will now be known as the Carnival Center for the Performing Arts.

With the additional $10 million donation, Carnival relinquished its naming rights for the concert hall and instead purchased the naming rights for the entire Performing Arts Center.

The facility consists of the Sanford & Delores Ziff Ballet Opera House and the John S. and James L. Knight Concert Hall.

Crown Princess Update

Posted by Michael on 07/19/06

The following statement was released by Princess Cruises at 8:30AM PST:

Crown Princess is currently docked at Port Canaveral, Florida, following a heavy list that occurred yesterday afternoon as the ship was sailing towards New York, and which caused a number of passenger injuries. We would again like to extend our sincerest apologies to our passengers and crew on board Crown Princess for this unsettling incident, and also for any injuries they experienced. We can confirm that there were approximately 240 passengers treated onboard for various injuries such as abrasions, bruises and fractures, of which 94 were transferred to local hospitals ashore for evaluation and treatment. All of these passengers have currently been released, with the exception of three passengers and two crew members who remain in the hospital but are, thankfully, expected to make a full recovery. Approximately 1600 passengers have already disembarked Crown Princess and departed home. There are still approximately 1850 passengers still onboard and we are currently assisting them with their homeward travel arrangements. As a result of the heavy list, there was also considerable superficial damage to the interior of the ship, and this is expected to be quickly repaired. The cause of the sudden list is still being assessed.
